Old loves die hard...and in the worst places.

Book Description:

Question: what do you get the man with everything?

Answer: when that man is the heir of the late mystery writer Robin Spencer, retired homicide detective Mac Faraday, you get him a cold case to solve.

In Shades of Murder, Mac Faraday is once again the heir to an unbelievable fortune. This time the benefactor is a collector of stolen art. But this isn't just any stolen work of art - it's a masterpiece with a murder attached to it.

Ilysa Ramsay was in the midst of taking the art world by storm with her artistic genius. Hours after unveiling her latest masterpiece, she is found dead in her Deep Creek Lake studio, and her painting is nowhere to be found.

Almost a decade later, the long lost Ilysa Ramsay masterpiece has found its way into Mac Faraday's hands and he can't resist the urge to delve into the case.

A world away, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, former JAG lawyer Joshua Thornton agrees to do a favor for the last person he would ever expect - a convicted serial killer.

The favor: solve the one murder wrongly attributed to him.

Joshua finds an unexpected ally in Cameron Gates, a spunky detective who has reason to believe the young woman known to the media only as Jane Doe, victim number four, was the victim of a copycat. Together, Joshua and Cameron set out to light a flame under the cold case only to find that someone behind the scenes wants the case to remain cold, and is willing to kill to keep it that way.

Little do these detectives know that the paths of their respective cases are on a collision course when they follow the clues to bring them together in a showdown with a killer who's got a talent for murder!

Never tell Mac Faraday not to do something.

Spencer's police chief, David O'Callaghan, learns this lesson the hard way when he orders Mac Faraday to stay away from the south end of Spencer's mountaintop - even though he owns the property. It doesn't take long for Mac to find out what lies on the other side of the stone wall and locked gate, on which hangs a sign warning visitors to Keep Out!

Topping the list of the 10 top haunted places in America, Astaire Castle is associated with two suicides, three mysterious disappearances, and four murders since it was built almost a century ago - and Mac Faraday owns it!

In spite of David's warning, Mac can't resist unlocking the gate to see the castle that supposedly hasn't seen a living soul since his late mother had ordered it closed up after the double homicide and disappearance of Damian Wagner, a world-famous master of horror novels.

What starts out as a quick tour of a dusty old castle turns into another Mac Faraday adventure when Astaire Castle becomes the scene of even more murders. Mac is going to need to put all of his investigative talents to work to sort out this case that involves the strangest characters he has run into yet - including a wolf man. No, we're not talking about Gnarly.

                         Interview:

Lauren, you are an international best-selling mystery author. Your twentieth mystery will be coming out later this year. What took you so long to start having your books produced in audio?
My readers want my mysteries to be in all formats: e-book, print, and audiobooks. Whenever I mention giving up even one of them I hear wailing from somewhere.
When I first became an author, I had one friend who only listened to her books in audio. She had a long commute to work and that was when she would listen to her books. She would go through a couple books a week. Over the years, I would occasionally, but not very often, have readers request all of my books in audible. So when Amazon suggested I go through their company ACX.com, I decided to do it. Since then, I have discovered that for many readers, if it were not for audiobooks, they would not be able to enjoy their favorite books.
For example, my sister listens to my books during her commute to work. With her busy lifestyle that is the only time she can read my books. So I gave them to her in digital format and she listens to them through her audio system in her SUV.

How closely does the writer need to work with the audio producer?
Closer than I thought. The author can’t just sit back and wait for the narrator to wave their magic wand and say, “Fini! It is done!”
First off, the writer should go over the characters with the narrator. I supply them with a cast of characters and give them a bit of an insight into how I see them. Keep in mind, the narrator is a voice actor. Listeners aren’t just looking to have a book read to them. They want to experience the book, and the best way for that to happen is for the narrator to understand each of the characters and bring them to life for the listener. That’s what brings your book to life.

I noticed that you have worked with four different narrators for your books? Is there a reason for that, or did it just work out that way?
In a way, it just worked out that way. When I first opened my books for auditions to find narrators for them I had selected Dan Lawson to narrate The Murders at Astaire Castle and Blast from the Past. He did a super job. But then, due to scheduling, he was unavailable for other books.
So then I decided to make the Thorny Rose mysteries available in audiobook and selected a CJ McAllister, who has a sophisticated style that was perfect for this series, which focuses on murder cases in the big city in and around our nation’s capital and around the world.
I felt that the Mac Faraday mysteries needed a tone that was more down to earth then the big-city style of the thorny rose mysteries. So I felt that I needed a different narrator for those for that series. I was very lucky to find James Lewis to narrate the Mac Faraday mysteries.
At the same time that I was looking for narrator for the Mac Faraday mysteries Mike Alger submitted an audition which intrigued me. Upon looking at his website I listened to a sample of his work where he spoke with a down-home style that I found to be perfect for the Lovers in Crime Mysteries, which take place in the small town rural community of the Ohio Valley.

What do you look for in a narrator?
Patience! I am joking, but one of the most important things I look for when it comes to working with anyone is someone who is easy to work with.
For my books, I needed to find narrators who had a wide range of voices that they could bring to the audio recordings. My books do have a lot of characters in them and readers of the print and e-book’s have the advantage of a cast of characters at the beginning of the book in which they can refer to. However, I can’t include that list in the audiobook version. Therefore, listeners must depend on the narrator to bring each character to life in a way that is not only interesting, but unique so that they will can distinguish one character from the other.

Do you have any upcoming projects that your fans should be looking for?
Twofer Murder will be a treat for mystery lovers because it will be two mysteries in one novel. This book will contain all of the characters from the Mac Faraday, Lovers in Crime, and Thorny Rose mysteries. The guys go fishing and get embroiled in a murder mystery. Meanwhile, the ladies go off to a murder mystery writers conference and end up wrapped up in their own mystery when an up and coming mystery writer ends up dead! Can’t beat that! Two mysteries for the price of one!
