Interview:

Do you ever get writer’s block? What helps you overcome it?

I haven’t experienced real writers block, but there are times when I feel unmotivated.  That’s when I’d rather watch reality TV than sit with my computer.
When that happens, I give myself a super-short goal.  I’ll tell myself to just write a hundred words, and I don’t care if the writing is good or not.  That’s like a warm-up for me.  Sometimes getting started is the hardest part, so if I get my computer out and throw some words down, chances are I’ll get on a roll and I’ll accomplish more than I thought I would.  The writing may be horrible, but at least I feel good that I did something, rather than nothing.
What is your next project?

Truths Not Spoken is about Laurel and her relationship with Kyle, but I include some scenes with Laurel and her best friend, Ashley.  My next book is all about Ashley.
While they’re best friends, the two women are very different.  Ashley tries to be sophisticated, but she’s a small-town girl at heart.  She wobbles on her too high heels, and her dresses are always a bit too tight, but she thinks she needs to present a certain image for her job.
Ashely’s life turns upside down when she meets a man who isn’t quite what he seems either.  She’s a lot of fun and I’m having a great time getting to know her. I hope my readers will have fun getting to know her, too.
Do you have another profession besides writing?

I work in marketing, helping small businesses grow.  I do a lot of public speaking and a lot of business development activities.  One of the things I love about it is helping other people achieve their dreams.

Because I spend a lot of focus on my day job, writing has become my mental getaway.  I get to create people and events that are completely of my own imagination.  I can make their days as perfect (or as horrible) as I want.  It is great stress relief!

Where do you write?

I’m lucky to be a remote employee for my full-time job, but that means I spend a lot of time at my computer in my home-office.  I’m perfectly happy and productive in that room, but when it’s time for me to write for my personal projects, that is the last place I want to be!  Instead, I sit on my sofa with my feet up and my computer on my lap.  The change of environment makes it easier for me to change my mindset.

If there is one thing you want readers to remember about you, what would it be?

I hope readers will think that I’m a regular person, just like them.   Truths Not Spoken isn’t autobiographical at all, but I did try to include a lot of the feelings I have.  I hope people who read the book can identify with the feelings that Laurel has about Kyle and Emily, and even her best friend Ashely.  I hope my readers feel like my characters are their friends, just like I felt when I was creating them.

  3. I think that this book looks great! Based on the synopsis, I imagine it to be an exciting book with a few surprises thrown in.

Also, I was really struck by the author's remark about writer's block, and how feeling unmotivated plays a part in that. That's something that I don't think I'd seen/heard before in an interview, and it gives me something to chew on.

    Thanks!
