Interview:

  1. What inspired you to write Under a Tuscan Sky?

It’s so exciting. My daughter and her fiancĂ© are getting married in Tuscany in May this year. We flew over for a recce in October and instantly, I fell in love with it. It is such a romantic, magical place. The landscape is typically Tuscan and simply stunning, and the character came to me whilst sitting overlooking the undulating grapevines. Elena was the character who came to me first, she is the owner of the villa and farm, an elderly woman living out her final days who is concerned, angry even, that her estranged daughter Roz will inherit it. Demanding her granddaughter Olivia should be entrusted, she has her reasons, but fails to realise the wider consequences.

  1. What was the hardest part in writing Under a Tuscan Sky?

Tuscany is so beautiful that trying to find words to do it justice was difficult. I was also experimenting and trying not to have too many other subplots going on with the main story. Sometimes I get carried away with other characters in my stories.

  1. What was the easiest part to write Under a Tuscan Sky?

Olivia, my main character. As I got to know her I found her story tragic because even as a grown woman, she continued to carry deep emotional scars from her childhood which gives her this vulnerability. When I did further research into the psychological effects the past must have had on her, I found myself constantly wanting to hug and reassure her. She’s open and honest but has such a susceptibility about her. I was rooting for her to change her thinking and like to think her Italian grandmother’s legacy was in the end, far more than just a villa and farm.

  1. Which Character do you feel more connected to?

I can’t choose. Olivia and Elena have such endearing qualities which I love and so feel a connection with them both. Olivia’s mamma Roz however made a huge decision when she was younger and I suppose I connected with her for a different reason. I think any mother knows that however much you try, you can never give 100%. I think I connected to her character because I had to try and put myself into her shoes and explore her motivation in more depth. What she did was something I could never envisage doing. You will understand what I mean when you read it.

  1. Do you have any upcoming projects and if so can you tell us about it?

I have a yearning to write a dual time line because I find blending the historical with the contemporary, fascinating. That project will continue in the background however, as I continue writing contemporary romances. My next novel is also set in Italy but I shall keep you guessing as to where.

About Karen Aldous:

Karen Aldous enjoys village life on the edge of the north-downs in Kent with easy access to the buzz of London. Not only does she love the passive pleasures of reading and writing, she also craves the more active pursuits with her family and friends such as walking, cycling and skiing especially when they involve food and wine!

Karen gets much of her inspiration from her travels and if she had to choose, France, Greece, Switzerland, Italy and the USA would be her favourites. However, wherever she goes, she discovers a new character emerges in 'Karen's World'. She likes to write about strong independent women who can direct their own lives - but struggle to control them! And, of course there's always a gorgeous hunk or two!
