A Stranger She Can Trust Book Tour Interview + Giveaway
A Stranger She Can Trust
by Regan Black
GENRE: Romantic suspense
Outside a busy Philadelphia nightclub, a woman stumbles from her taxi. Beaten and bruised, she is an amnesiac who must rely on a handsome stranger to help her uncover her identity. Carson Lane—a paramedic with his own dark history—can't help but bring this beautiful, vulnerable woman under his wing. As they begin unraveling who she really is, he realizes falling in love could be the biggest risk of all.
He wheeled around to find Grant Sullivan, owner of the Escape Club, leaning into the kitchen doorway. “Sir?”
“I need a word.” He tipped his head toward his office. “Come on back.”
“Sure thing.” Carson untied the apron and left it on a hook by the kitchen door, then followed Grant down the hall. The man’s stocky build and easygoing outlook belied his quickness and boundless energy. At his boss’s gesture, he eased into one of the two chairs facing the desk. The office was quiet, only the dull throb of the band’s bass carrying through the floors.
“How did things go today?” Grant’s brown eyes were bright with anticipation. “On your PFD shift, I mean.”
“Smooth and normal shift,” Carson replied, hoping his relief at the easy question wasn’t too obvious.
Grant nodded, his thick salt-and-pepper eyebrows dipping low with his frown. “And the knee is holding up?”
“Yes.” Carson forced a smile. “Feeling stronger every day.” It was a small fib. The bullet had passed through his thigh, just above his knee, causing all kinds of damage to muscles and connective tissue along the way. He’d resumed walking three weeks after the surgery, but the pain had leveled out around week eight. Contrary to the physical therapy consensus, the motions never got easier.
“I got a call from Evelyn today. She’d like to get you back on the schedule full-time.”
“She said as much to me,” Carson admitted.
“So, why do you keep hanging around here?”
What inspired you to write this story?
A Stranger She Can Trust is part of the Escape Club series, which was inspired by my appreciation and affection for firefighters and the first responders who are every day heroes within our communities. Firefighters saved our house when our chimney caught fire during a New Year’s Eve party when I was a kid and moments like that leave an impression. It takes courage, training and a certain spirit to be a first responder and I enjoy exploring those characteristics in this series.
The bedrock of the Escape Club world is the club itself, founded by a police officer forced into early retirement due to a shooting. Although he opens a nightclub and begins a new career, he can’t stop helping people in need. Everyone hired to the club knows how to entertain and serve the customer as well as how they should respond when people like Melissa Baxter turn up, asking for help.
What was your favorite part to write?
The action sequences are always exciting. I’m a sucker for the energy and stress - good and bad - within a chase or physical conflict and the little voice in my head cheering for the good guys is just fun. That being said, my favorite part of this story might just be the moment when Carson learns Melissa is in love with him. I won’t spoil the moment for you, but I will add that the scene was one of those happy, unexpected surprises during the draft phase that reinforces how much I love writing books and spending my days with characters like Carson and Melissa.
What was the hardest part to write?
A Stranger She Can Trust challenged me through several scenes - fortunately I enjoy that part of my job. One of the parts of the story I struggled with most would have to be when Melissa learns her best friend has been murdered before she recovers her memories of the traumatic incident. That helpless emotion snowballs when she faces her best friend’s parents at the funeral and feels utterly inadequate to help them find their daughter’s killer. She wants desperately to find justice for her friend and give them all closure, but her brain simply will not cooperate. Tapping into those deep emotions of loss and frustration are difficult, but again, so worth it when the story comes together.
How did you come up with your characters?
This book started with a scene in my head, an injured woman stumbling from a taxi, into the arms of a paramedic who isn’t sure he can help anyone anymore. Exploring what brought each character to that point involved imagination, research, and some fun brainstorming sessions.
Heroes and heroines wounded physically or emotionally - on the job or by the job - are at the heart of this series. This book in particular deals with some serious trust issues. How do you know who to trust when you don’t even know your name or fully understand your circumstances? As both an Army wife and a woman subject to the whims of a spine injury, I know life happens to all of us and we all handle it differently. What I enjoy most about Carson and Melissa, as well as the other characters in this series, is the way they cope with the cards they’ve been dealt and I hope readers enjoy that journey too.
Do you have anything coming up and can you tell us about it?
Oh, there are several things still to come in 2017. I’m happy to share Marriage Confidential, co-written with the amazing Debra Webb, will be available in July from Harlequin Intrigue. Sam and Madison have their hands full outsmarting a hacker bent on creating an international crisis. This fall, fans of the Escape Club will meet firefighter Daniel Jennings and Shannon Nolan in Protecting Her Secret Son, my next book with Harlequin Romantic Suspense. This couple surprised me more than once, but I absolutely loved how they grew together on their adventure. In December, Special Agent Cowboy will be released. It’s a novella in the Coltons of Shadow Creek series from Harlequin Romantic Suspense. Set in the Texas hill country, I had a blast researching and writing ranches and cowboys after several years away.
And my next paranormal novel in the Knight Traveler series, Timeless Light, will also be available later this year.
Thanks so much for having me!
