Most ladies dream of finding a husband, but Etta Wilding-Marsh dreams of the law. Establishing a law school for women is the determined firebrandÕs dearest ambition and she has no time for distraction and certainly no time for the wickedly handsome antagonist from her youth.
After years of annoying her from afar, Lord Christopher Hiddleston leaps at the chance to return to Cambridge and the fiery girl he has never forgotten. Now a successful Gothic novelist, Christopher will use his notoriety to support the school...and drive Etta wild.
A chance meeting leads to another, and then the firebrand and the antagonist find a passion of a different sort. But can a woman who dreams too much and a man who never does truly find a happily ever after?

Interview:

1.     What’s your inspiration for the Silk Series? What connects all the stories?

The Silk Series wasn’t supposed to be a series. Originally, my publisher asked me to headline a new sub-category they were establishing. At the time, I was enjoying a tv show called Silk about barristers in modern day London. I thought that was pretty nifty so decided to make the hero a barrister in Victorian times. My publisher liked the book so much they asked me to write a series and the rest is history!

Each book features an aspect of the law. The first, a barrister. The second, an estate planning solicitor. The third, a legal scribe. The fourth, learning the law. And the fifth will be a detective. Four of the heroes attended Cambridge together, while two of the heroines grew up in Cambridge and may have just crossed paths with the four students…

2.     What made you create an independent heroine like Etta Wilding-Marsh in Silk & Scholar? What made her want to establish a law school for women?

It’s important to me that my heroines embody feminism. Etta is a woman who doesn’t understand why she can’t be given opportunities just because of her gender and she isn’t subtle about letting people know that. She wants to study the law, and as she is as capable as a man, she doesn’t understand why she can’t.

Etta is a blunt tool, while her friend Gwen (the heroine of Silk & Scars) is more subtle, and now that Gwen is the Duchess of Sowrith and has the means to make a school happen and a husband who supports her, their long-held dream of opening a law school for women, of helping other women rise above their limitations, is finally happening

3.     Tell us more about Lord Christopher Hiddleston? He sounds intriguing. What is one characteristic of your hero that would endear him to the readers?

Thank you! I think Christopher is a bit excellent. Physically, I was inspired by Sam Heughan from Outlander (he’s very pretty!) but I think Christopher’s most endearing characteristic is he respects Etta and supports her. He will always stand by her side, supporting her in all things. From the get-go, he thinks she’s clever and intelligent, bold and determined, and he believes she can do anything she puts her mind to.

4.     What is a romantic moment between Etta and Christopher?

Christopher, a gothic novelist, has asked Etta to work with him on his latest book, a new series about a private inquiry agent and a lady who becomes a detective. Here, she agrees.

Looking at him now, resting exhausted in a chair, that same feeling rushed over her, threaded with concern and a desire to care for him, to make it so the exhaustion left his features and he again turned that wicked grin upon her. “I will work with you.”

Christopher opened one eye.

Etta lifted her chin. Uncertainty made her falter, and she despised faltering. “I will work with you. On your lady detective.”

Both eyes snapped open. “You will?”

She nodded. “Yes.”

The most glorious smile lit his face.

Quickly, she averted her gaze. You have no call to think his smile glorious, Etta Wilding-Marsh. Get your mind back where it belongs. Crossing her arms, she affected a glare. “It had better not be claptrap.”

“It won’t.” He straightened in the chair, the tiredness falling away. “It will be the very best I can make it. And it will be even better with you to ensure I don’t fall to lazy habits.”

He truly did esteem her opinion. He spoke and his lips formed words, the upper thin and well-defined, the points forming a sharp bow. His lower lip was full, generous and…and she shouldn’t be thinking of his lips.

“Don’t you think?”

She snapped back to attention. “I apologise, my mind was elsewhere.”

His face fell, but quickly he recovered, that infernal grin taking residence. “The trope is tired, but it’s what the public demand. I’ve seen it time and again and—”

She placed her hand on his.

Abruptly silent, his gaze whipped to hers then fell to where her hand covered his. Belatedly, she realised he wore no gloves and neither did she. She could feel the strength in his hand, the warmth. His fingers were long and well-formed, the nails short and neat. Breath caught in her throat, she controlled the urge to flex her fingers to trace the veins in the back of his hand. To feel more of his strength, his warmth.

5.     What’s up next in the Silk Series?

The fifth and final book in the Silk Series, Silk & Scarlet. This will be my detective novel! A murder occurs at a Yorkshire manor and Rose, a lady’s maid to one of the guests, recalls her acquaintance as a girl of a gentleman who went on to become a private inquiry agent, the Honourable Nathaniel Evans. I’m having lots of fun researching this book and hope to share it with you all soon.

Thanks for having me!
